Wayne Shorter is an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Shorter became widely known in the late 1950s as a member and eventually lead songwriter for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In the 1960s, he joined Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet, and since then he has co-founded the synthetic jazz group Weather Report. He has recorded over 20 albums as a group. Shorter's numerous compositions have become the norm in jazz, and his work has received worldwide recognition, critical acclaim and various accolades. Shorter won 11 Grammy Awards. He was also praised for his mastery of soprano saxophones, entering a dynasty in 1970 as the winner of Down Beat's annual poll on this instrument, winning the Critics' Poll for 10 consecutive years and by 18 readership. The New York Times 2008 Shorter described as "the greatest jazz subgroup composer and the greatest contender for an improvised living artist". In 2017, he received the Polar Music Prize.
